||The Weight Management Council Australia Ltd is a not for profit organisation which was established in 1994 to administer the Weight Management Code of Practice. The Council acts as the representative body for its industry members.|
The Code which was developed by representatives of the weight management industry, consumer organisations, health and nutritional professionals and government consumer affairs departments is reviewed on an ongoing basis; and
provides a comprehensive guide for the protection of consumers’ rights and the conduct of weight management businesses.
The Code was developed as a result of a report of consumers experiences with the weight management industry by the Consumer Advocacy and Financial Counselling Association of Victoria 1992.
Providers of weight management products and services who have been admitted to membership of the Weight Management Council Australia Ltd are bound by the Weight Management Code of Practice.
Membership of the Council requires a rigorous assessment of each weight management provider’s weight loss program or product, advertising material, consumer affairs processes, staff training, as well corporate integrity and compliance checking.
Council Membership of service providers affords consumers the assurance that their rights are protected and that products and services have been assessed by the Council and are reviewed on an ongoing basis.
Weight Management Council members undertake to deal openly, honestly, and transparently with consumers and to offer appropriate and evidence-based weight management services. For this reason, health care professionals can recommend members’ products or programs to your patients or customers with complete confidence.
The Council is managed by a board of directors consisting of an Independent Chairperson, representatives of the Australian Nutrition Foundation, Consumers Federation of Australia and industry representatives.
